OVERVIEW
The focus of this series is on you as a leader. Make things happen—take action by leading people, facilitating team decisions, getting results, and motivating and sustaining performance. These four topics are covered over a series of four seminars. Each seminar is four hours long and consists of lecture, demonstration and hands-on exercises.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
LCCS 0201 Leading People: Participants will learn how to use the Coach Approach to lead others. In this action workshop, participants will learn to apply inquiry-based techniques used by professional business and executive coaches to guide people in solving their own most difficult issues.
Author, executive coach, and professor Steve Gladis, PhD, will teach you how to get the results you want by:
- Asking critical, probative questions
- Listening for the “unsaid but important” issues
- Pinpointing the key issue and establishing options
- Holding people accountable for their future actions
A complimentary copy of Dr. Gladis’ book, The Executive Coach in the Corporate Forest, will be given to each seminar participant.

LCCS 0202 Facilitating Team Decisions: Using a Coach-Approach to teams, participants will learn about the power of appreciative inquiry when approaching problems or issues. Participants will also learn how to apply action-learning techniques. Teams will get hands-on experience working on real, pressing issues they face in their organizations.
Dr. Gladis will teach you how to get the results you want by:
- Employing this technique to solve tough organizational problems
- Identifying the key issue of the client—problem presenter
- Participating in a group as an active contributor
- Leading or “coaching” a group to successfully solve problems
A complimentary copy of ASTD’s InfoLine publication on Action Learning by Dr. Michael Marquardt will be given to each seminar participant.
LCCS 0203 Getting Results: Participants will learn how to apply the Trust Triangle to their personal and professional lives. They will also learn how to use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence to get the results they want. Specifically, they will learn how to structure a document or presentation to get agreement or consensus from decision makers. In this action workshop, participants will apply these new skills to real, work related issues.
Dr. Gladis will teach you how to get the results you want by:
- Understanding the three critical elements of the Trust Triangle
- Identifying the 5 C’s, 5 K’s, and 5 H’s of the Trust Triangle
- Employing the five steps of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence
- Using the Sequence on a critical work-related issue
A complimentary copy of Dr. Gladis’ book, The Trusted Leader: Understanding the Trust Triangle, will be given to each seminar participant.
LCCS 0204 Motivating & Sustaining Performance: Participants will learn how to motivate people. In this final action seminar, learn how transparency and clear leadership communication can produce sustained performance. Participants will also learn what motivates people and how to apply motivational research to their most pressing leadership challenges.
Dr. Gladis will teach you how to get the results you want by:
- Using personality differences as a strength, not a challenge
- Employing feed forward as a powerful self-improvement technique
- Asking the 4 magical questions to improve any organization
- Knowing what motivates people to work harder and like it better
A complimentary copy of Dr. Gladis’ book, The Transparent Leader, will be given to each seminar participant.

CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS

This certificate program consists of four seminars. In order to receive a certificate of completion, participants must achieve a 75% or better attendance record. Successful participants will be awarded 1.6 CEUs (Continuing Education Units).

Steve Gladis serves as president and CEO of Steve Gladis Communications (SGC), an executive communications firm focused on helping leaders communicate for success. Offering professional development and training programs, executive coaching and advising, and corporate consulting, SGC abides by one basic value-respect for our clients and our strategic partners. Dr. Gladis has taught hundreds of clients from a host of companies in the Northern Virginia Region, including Cox, Lockheed Martin, SAIC, Anteon, FBI, Justice, DEA, Labor, EPA, The Washington Post, Gannett News, and many others. |
A former member of the University of Virginia's faculty, Dr. Gladis served as an associate dean in the School of Professional Studies and the director of the University's Northern Virginia Center. In a previous career as an FBI special agent, he taught at the FBI Academy, was the editor of the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, and the chief of speechwriting for the director of the FBI, and held a number of both headquarters and field-agent assignments around the country. Dr. Gladis has published numerous magazine and journal articles as well as 15 books; his most recent book is The Trusted Leader. A regular lecturer and speaker, Dr. Gladis received his master's degree and PhD from George Mason University and teaches communications classes at George Mason.
A committed civic and academic leader, Dr. Gladis serves on the Executive Board of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors for the Northern Virginia Community Foundation, serves on the School of Professional Studies Advisory Board at the University of Virginia, is chairman emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Washington Math Science Technology Public Charter High School, and is a former member of the University of Virginia's Faculty Senate. He is also a former U.S. Marine Corps officer and a Vietnam Veteran.
