Facility Management Instructors

The Facility Management Certificate Program has an instructor base of over 30 credentialed professionals with diverse teaching experience and perspective from federal and local government, private industry, and facility management consulting.

Bridget Anderson, BA, who established Cultural Commerce in 2005, is a certified occupational Spanish instructor who has taught more than 225 people throughout the Mid-Atlantic region over the past three years. She has her BA in communications, a minor in Spanish language, and has traveled extensively in Mexico and Spain. She is an active member of the Hispanic Business Council of the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce, a member of Leadership Fairfax Class of 1998, and past president of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the American Marketing Association. She teaches FM 408.

Andrew Bass, BS, is president of DLI Communications. He specializes in the design and operation of integrated voice and data communications systems. He teaches FM 230.

Glenn Compton, BA, MBA, is retired from the American Petroleum Institute as director of office services. He has a second career in sales and marketing as director of business development for Red Coats, Inc. and Admiral Security Services. He teaches FM 100, 215, and 223.

Elizabeth P. Daily, BA, is with The Michael Companies, Inc. where she deals extensively with the tenant and landlord relationship, office leasing and commercial office building sales. She teaches FM 226.

Richard Fanelli, AIA, CFM, IFMA Fellow, is a founding principal of Fanelli-McClain Design Studios, a commercial interior planning firm in Fairfax, VA. He also is a long-time instructor for IFMA International and has been a contributing author for four BOMI Institute facilities management text books. Richard served as the president of the Capital Chapter of IFMA and has served on the board of directors of IFMA International. He is a regular contributor for the Washington Business Journal where he writes articles on project management and workplace issues. He teaches FM 105, 200 and 224.

Edward J. Hamer, CFM, FMA, is the director of facilities services at The Madeira School and has previously worked at Durham Academy and the University of Pittsburgh. He has held memberships in APPA, BOMA, and IFMA and graduated from the APPA Institute. He has more than 20 years of experience in facilities management and been responsible for all aspects of facilities management including, janitorial services, security, operations and maintenance, project management. He is an active member of the Capital Chapter of IFMA. He teaches FM 100, 115, 215, 223, and 227.

Frank L. Henry, JD CFM, works for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development headquartered in Alexandria, VA, and has more than 18 years of facilities management experience with companies in the Washington, D.C. area. Mr. Henry holds a juris doctorate degree from the George Mason University School of Law, and a MS degree in administration from Central Michigan University. He has been awarded the CFM designation. He teaches FM 100 and FM 215.

Christopher P. Hodges, MS, PE, RRC, CFM, LEED-AP, IFMA Fellow, is a founding principal of Facility Engineering Associates. He has over 25 years experience in the evaluation, design, and project management of building repair and restoration projects and facility management. He teaches FM 100, 115, 224, 403.

Lance Jaccard, AIA, MA, is a founding partner of O'Brien, Travis, Jaccard, Inc. Architecture and Interiors. He teaches FM 105.

Deborah Johnson, CFM, is the director of Corporate Facilities & Real Estate Development for Pentagon Federal Credit Union. She has been in the facilities field for 30 years. Currently, she is managing the construction of a new corporate headquarters for PFCU in Alexandria, VA. She teaches FM 229.

Eugene Kulas, BS, currently holds position as program manager with the United States Government managing facility related, high profile, multi million dollar, classified programs for the Intelligence Community. He earned his BA in mechanical engineering from Michigan State University and a certificate from George Washington University in the Facilities Management Program. He has an extensive background working in the private and government sector for over 25 years allowing him to bring a view of both worlds to the classroom. He teaches FM 200.

David Leathers, CFM, has been in the facility and property management field for 30 years. He is director of facilities for Catholic Community Services in Washington, D.C. He teaches FM 100, 115, 205, 215, 224, 300, and 403.

John Mackay, CFM, is facility management consultant with MacKnight Associates in Arlington. His practice areas include organizational and strategic assessments, performance management, and business analysis and reporting. Mr. Makay most recently served for seven years as a facility manager and analyst for Gannett/USA Today at their headquarters in McLean, Virginia. He holds a BA in Economics from University of Virginia, earned the Professional Certificate in Facility Management from George Mason University in 2004, and earned his CFM in 2005. John has been a member of the Capital Chapter of IFMA since 2000 and has recently been certified as an instructor for IFMA for "The Business of FM." He teaches FM 100, 200, 215, 300.

Diane MacKnight, BA, CFM, is president of MacKnight Associates. Ms. MacKnight is a former senior vice president with Trammell Crow Company and former vice president of facilities for Gannett/USA Today. She is also past international president of IFMA and past president of the Capital Chapter of IFMA. Ms. MacKnight also edited "The Business of FM" course for IFMA and teaches in IFMA's professional development program. Ms. MacKnight. She teaches FM 100, 200, 223, 215 and 300.

Philip Martin, MBA, is president of Synergistic FM Solutions LLC, a consulting firm specializing in facility management organizational development, web-based project collaboration, facility information management services and infrastructure process improvement. He is the past president of the IFMA FM Consultants Council and the founder of the FM Consultants Roundtable for the Capital Chapter of IFMA. He teaches FM 300.

Ted Mattingly, CFM, is the facility manager for the National Recreation and Park Association Headquarters in Ashburn, V.A. He has more than 16 years experience in facility management, administration, operations and maintenance of commercial, industrial and institutional facilities. He is a 1999 graduate of the George Mason University Professional Certificate in Facility Management Program and has been a certified facility manager since 1999. He teaches FM 100, 115 and 200.

W. Kirtley Miller, Jr. (Kirt), B Arch, CFM, was employed by Verizon Communications for 25 years in various real estate planning, project management, and disaster recovery capacities. He participated in Verizon's 9-11 New York City disaster recovery efforts including the provisioning of temporary and permanent space for 2,300 displaced employees. Kirt has also written and teaches courses for IFMA and is a past IFMA chapter president and IFMA International Board of Directors member. He is currently employed as a corporate real estate consultant and supports clients in strategic and tactical planning and implementation efforts. He teaches FM 100 and 105.

Jim Morris, MSBA, CFM, manages Facilities, Environmental Health & Safety and Business Services for Lockheed Martin, MS2 Undersea Systems (Defense Contractor) located in Manassas, VA. The Manassas facility is ~1.2msf, with 24/7 operations consisting of a central utility plant, toxic gases, chemicals, clean rooms, test and assembly labs, and typical supporting office space. Jim started his facilities career in 1981 as a maintenance technician. Before entering into management in 1990, he worked through multiple assignments related to building automation, energy management, building code inspections, maintenance engineering and corporate benchmarking. He teaches FM 100, 115, 200, 215, 225, 227, and 300.

Katya Naman, MBA, CCIM, CPM, RPA, is Vice President for Lowe Enterprises Real Estate Group, a national vertically integrated real estate firm. Ms. Naman's focus is on Asset Management and Property Management. She is an active member of CCIM, IREM and AOBA. She teaches FM 205 and 226.

Trevor L. Neve, PE, CFM, was a career Air Force base civil engineering officer. He spent a second career as a facility and engineering management consultant with LMI, and retired as a company director. He is author or contributing author of dozens on reports, including two for the president, has published several facility management articles, and has presented papers at IFMA conferences. He is currently a full-time independent facility and general management consultant. He teaches FM 100 and 115.

Francine Neville (Fran), BA, MA has 25 years of real estate experience in both retail and commercial transactions. Fran is a regional real estate manager for Verizon, handling lease negotiations, site disposals and property acquisitions. In addition to her MA, Fran is also a certified paralegal skilled in commercial contract drafting. She began her leasing career leasing shopping centers owned by major shopping center developers in Jacksonville, St. Louis, Atlanta and New Orleans. Fran loves real estate because "every deal is different...personalities make every transaction distinct, and it's a great way to combine business practice with creative thinking." Fran says the focus of her class is to "de-mystify real estate" for the students. She teaches FM 226.

Richard Payant, MA, CFM, CPE, is director of facilities management at Georgetown University with over 20 year of experience in facility management. He teaches FM 100, 115, and 215.

John T. Pivik, MS, CFM, PE, manages facilities operations and maintenance for The World Bank. He has 15 years as a consulting engineer (HVAC and energy management) and 8 years as a facility manager. He teaches FM 115, 205, 215 and 228.

Mark A. Pleskow, MS, PE, recently merged his consulting practice into HOK Consulting and serves as practice leader for facility planning and operations manager for the Washington, D.C. office. He also has a leadership role in providing real estate advisory and strategic planning services. He teaches FM 205 and 226.

Steve Roberts, CFM is the executive director of State Services Organization and a graduate of George Mason University's Facility Management Certificate Program. He has a BA in public administration from the University of Central Florida and a MBA from Averett University. He teaches FM 100, 115, 200, 205, 215, 224, 226, 230, and 300.

Stephen P. Sakach, CFM is a project manager and leads the Facility Management Consulting group at Facility Engineering Associates. He has over 12 years of experience in construction management and facility management at Georgetown University with a particular emphasis on developing processes and metrics to tell the "facilities story" to upper management and customers. He teaches FM 115, 225, 401, and 403.

Martin J. Suydam, MS, BS, has 40 years of military, government, industrial management experience. Currently, he is president of FOCUS Consulting, Inc. and a professor at Washington College teaching mathematics, computer science, and quantitative methods. He teaches FM 100, 200, 215, 221 and 224.

Liza Thelemann, RPA., MBA, is a senior property manager for McShea & Company with 19 years of experience managing properties with government and private sector tenants. She is a member of IFMA Professional Development Committee. She teaches FM 100, 200, and 215.

Jim Van de Voorde, MS, PE, CMF, has over 25 years of experience in facilities management. He is a retired naval officer, where he served for 20 years of active duty in a variety of public works and facilities management positions responsible for engineering, design, safety, project management, and operations and management functions. He also has experience in critical infrastructure and emergency planning and the use of geographic information systems for creating a common operating picture and improving effectiveness of delivering facilities services. He currently works for Smart Business Advisory and Consulting, LLC. He teaches FM 406.

George Voris, MBA, is senior vice president of the Randall Hagner Ltd. He has 25 years experience as a commercial real estate broker and consultant. He teaches FM 226.

Charles H. Washington, CFM, has 39 years experience in facilities management with a primary focus on facilities operations and maintenance, and, environmental safety and health. He is an environmental safety and health professional for Lockheed Martin in Manassas. He is also an instructor in Lockheed Martin's ESH safety education program. He teaches FM 100, 115, and 225.

James P. Whittaker, MS, PE, is president of Facility Engineering Associates. He has over 20 years experience in facilities operations and maintenance, building systems construction, performance assessment, facility management technologies, and project management of building repair restoration projects. He teaches FM 115, 221, 224, and 403.

Sean Yarup, MPH, is the environmental safety coordinator for Montgomery County Public Schools responsible for managing the indoor environmental quality program. With over 20 years of experience, Mr. Yarup has managed environmental safety and health programs at both Georgetown University and George Washington University. He teaches FM 225.
