Throughout the United States, fire departments and emergency management units have
implemented GIS for various types of situations. Fire departments use GIS to study response times for fire suppression,
to review ground command strategies, and to provide understanding of the type of fire and its effects. Information such
as floor plans, fire hydrant, and hazmat locations can be stored and easily accessed in the field using GIS. Emergency
managers use GIS to plan effective responses and recoveries during floods, earthquakes, storms, etc. They also use GIS
to implement plans to protect lives and property during an environmental crisis. Explores the uses of GIS during
large-scale natural disasters, fires, and hazmat situations. The materials will focus on planned responses and after
action reports for planning purposes.
