Course examines two important issues related to corrections. First, students will
learn about how GIS is used to examine offender re-entry into the community. Second, students will be introduced to GIS
uses within a corrections setting. The corrections community has recently begun using GIS to map out criminal behavior
within prisons, jails, and correctional communities. 3D mapping and hotspots are used to determine areas within prisons
prone to criminal activity. Mapping is also used to determine deployment of correctional officers to areas where gangs
may congregate and where safety issues may exist for inmates as well as correctional officers. Students will explore
using GIS to craft policy decisions, to make personnel deployment changes, and to implement various types of programming
within correctional settings.
This course is also available on a contract basis and can be tailored to suit your organization's needs. Please contact us to discuss your on-site opportunity.
