COURSE DESCRIPTION

Many people consider attending meetings a way of life in an organization. This holds true for those attending as participants as well as those who plan and conduct the meeting. Unfortunately not all of these meetings are as productive as participants and leaders desire. Course participants will learn the procedural elements of meetings as well as techniques and strategies for gaining involvement of participants. The course will also focus on making credible presentations to a variety of audiences.

    INSTRUCTOR

    Lucia S. King

    Ms. King received her B.A. in English Literature from Rollins College and an M.A. in Education Administration from Michigan State University. She is certified in Group and Family Process by the Center for Study of Human systems, Bethesda, Maryland.

    Lucia King was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She moved to the Washington, DC area in 1974 where she worked with the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). In her work with OTA she managed transportation policy projects, coordinated numerous industry panels, and worked with a variety of teams and advisory panels on science and technology issues. Her work at OTA led to an interest in organizational dynamics and group process. More recently she has consulted with the Environmental Protection Agency, analyzing federal systems for emergency response to hazardous materials accidents, conducting strategic planning sessions and facilitating staff development meetings. She has also conducted workshops, including: "Small Group Dynamics" for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, "Conducting Effective Meetings" for the Internal Revenue Service, and "Leader and Facilitator Meetings" for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. She is currently consulting with the Federal Emergency Management Agency on their hazardous materials policies and program.

    William L. King

    William "Bill" King is an organizational development consultant doing research in leadership development, personnel management, and training. He is currently the Vice President of Resolution Dynamics Inc. Over the past nine years he has provided extensive consulting and training to both the public and the private sector, with a heavy focus on solutions to specific organizational problems through training interventions.

    His areas of expertise include group facilitation skills and the analysis, design, and delivery of specialized training in the areas of team development, leadership development, communication skills, conflict resolution, human performance analysis, project management, strategic planning, and change management. He consistently receives outstanding reviews from his client students. His training emphasizes experiential training methods, simulations and applications, and group interaction.

    Mr. King's clients include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Internal Revenue Service, U.S. AID, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Customs Service and AMTRAK. He has conducted Leadership Focus Workshops for middle managers and supervisors in the Internal Revenue Service, Amtrak, and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Council. NRC's leadership training for the inspection teams train them in team building and interviewing and are now required courses for all NRC inspection team leaders (1990 to present). He has facilitated the team planning and team building process for US AID, the U.S. Customs - Logistics Division, and all of U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops - Migrant and Refugee Services' employees. He has conducted "Leader and Facilitator" training for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Amtrak. Within the last ten years, Mr. King has also managed a training project for the U.S. Department of Agriculture "Peanut Buying Point Automation Project," where he recruited, hired and trained staff; selected and organized training sites in various regions nationwide; and had overall responsibility for conducting 87 workshops (in a two-year period), and training 1,600 peanut buying point operators and USDA personnel in the operation of a system including interactive "smart cards" and special software (1987-88).

    He holds a B.A. degree in English from Harvard and a M.P.A. from American University. William King is a native of Arlington, Virginia, and now shares his time between Washington, DC and Luray, VA.

    Leona Mallidis

    Leona Mallidis is president of LM Associates, which specializes in executive development and other management development courses that include:

  • Leona Mallidis' career began at Avon Products where she was District Sales Manager for over 250 representatives. She provided product training, which resulted in increased sales, higher motivation and loyalty to the organization.

    She was Training Director for a financial software company, where she established a new department and delivered training programs for all levels of employees, from administrative staff to top executives.

    For six years Leona was Regional Program Director for Corporate Development with the American Management Association. She used consultative sales methods to assist clients in defining their training and development needs. Development solutions included on-site tailored training and corporate strategic planning.

    Leona has clients throughout the United States. Among her clients are Osram Sylvania, Polaroid Corporation, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston Water and Sewer Commission, Thomson Financial Services, The Grove, and Digital Equipment Corporation.

    She is a graduate of University of California at San Francisco and is a M.Ed. candidate at Boston University in Career Development.
