COURSE DESCRIPTION
Executive Leadership in the Public Sector is an innovative program that brings together leading-edge ideas and experts from the public and private sectors. Participants will focus on developing the core skills of effective leadership at the strategic level at which public sector leaders must operate today. The course content is based on OPM's Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) competencies.

The program is jointly presented by the School of Public Policy and the School of Management. It consists of six three-day sessions held monthly, plus individual coaching, according to the following schedule:

REGISTRATION FEES
Registration is limited to a maximum of 25 members per cohort for the course. The $14,400 tuition fee includes instruction, coaching with a personal executive coach, materials, and some meals.
Early Registration Discount
A 10% early registration discount will be applied to registrations received before November 1, 2008. Graduates of George Mason University are eligible for a 10% alumni discount; however, each participant may apply only one discount to the tuition fee.

FEATURES
Executive Leadership in the Public Sector develops in participants the competencies defined in the Office of Personnel Management's Executive Core Qualifications (ECQ), which is required for entry into the Senior Executive Service.

- Examination of how decision-making works most effectively in government, exploring the relationships with political stakeholders, media, interest groups, and other constituencies

Transforming Organizations and Managing Knowledge
- Tools to develop effective organizational culture, including team building, use of information technology, leveraging diversity, and conflict management.

Leading Effectively in a Complex Global Environment
- Exploration of the U.S. role in the world and the special challenges presented by regional conflicts, economic globalization, terrorism, and security issues

The Essentials of Effective Leadership & Determining Strategic Vision
- Examination of the role of executive leader in the public sector and development of personalized individual development plans in order to prepare for that role
- Exploration of how to develop and articulate a strategic vision for value creation within an agency, as well as how to get from vision to implementation.

Executing Your Strategic Vision
- Exploration of the key building blocks of strategic execution in the private sector: strategically aligning financial and human resources and leading the change effort

- Tools for engaging others in the execution of your strategic vision across three categories: influence and negotiation, leading teams and managing across the generational divide
