Modeling and Simulation is a National Critical Technology:

"Modeling and Simulation is the single most powerful tool available to support our nation's international competitiveness in a wide variety of economic sectors.... At the same time, this technology will address other pressing national challenges of military preparedness and operations, homeland security, disaster preparedness and relief, energy management and education."

-Letter to President Bush from
Congressman Randy Forbes,

Chairman of the Modeling and Simulation Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, April 26, 2006

  • CERTIFICATE OVERVIEW

George Mason University, in cooperation with Alion, presents the Modeling, Simulation and DoD Acquisition Certificate for Department of Defense Modeling and Simulation, and Acquisition Professionals. Seminar content is based on Alion's vast experience in Models, Simulation and Acquisition. DoD is attempting to accelerate the acquisition process. M&S is a critical technology to accomplish this. To gain the advantages of M&S, you must understand its capabilities.

Adding new skills and expanding areas of knowledge increases your value to the organization and enables you to take advantage of new job opportunities. This is not just a concept, its part of the new National Security Personnel System. This innovative program is conducted in a highly participatory classroom setting. Seating is limited to 20 students per session.

    About Alion

Alion Science and Technology is an employee-owned technology solutions company delivering technical expertise and operational support to the Department of Defense, civilian government agencies and commercial customers. Building on almost 70 years of R&D and engineering experience, Alion brings innovation and insight to multiple business areas: defense operations; modeling & simulation; wireless communication; industrial technology; chemical, biological, nuclear & environmental sciences; information technology; and naval architecture & marine engineering. The DoD and industry rely on Alion for a broad array of modeling & simulation (M&S) and technical and professional services; our 2D and 3D modeling solutions support advanced training for both the military and first responders. In addition, Alion leads policy, design and development efforts to create standard automated interfaces between simulation and Command, Control, Communication, Computer and Intelligence (C41) systems.

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program is the convergence of an emerging technology, a need and a requirement that gives you an opportunity to gain an advantage in the M&S arena; an understanding of the concepts and issues that make M&S a Critical National Technology.

    WHO SHOULD ATTEND

    Individuals who will benefit include:

    • Managers of government M&S programs.
    • Acquisition Professionals looking for ways to expand their knowledge base.
    • Anyone involved in management, oversight or advisory activities involving DoD M&S.
    • Anyone involved in or seeking the opportunity to provide M&S support to DoD.

    CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS

To receive a Certificate of Completion, participants must successfully complete the Foundations of DoD Modeling and Simulation and the Applications of Modeling and Simulation.

    PROGRAM BENEFITS

This certificate is the only one of its kind, focusing on the use of modeling and simulation throughout the entire acquisition lifecycle, from needs/capabilities development through system retirement. The student will get a focused course of instruction, from an acquisition perspective.

After completing the Modeling, Simulation and Department of Defense Acquisition Certificate, the student will be able to recognize and apply M&S resources and accompanying methods and procedures to support the DoD acquisition process. This will allow Acquisition Professionals to better perform their assigned responsibilities with regard to modeling and simulation. It provides a level of proficiency that on the job training and current course offerings can not attain. It also provides a way to demonstrate self improvement and objective performance measures to meet the National Security Personnel System performance objectives.

For contractors, it provides a way to understand the DoD approach to M&S and may provide insight into ways to better accommodate DoD needs in contract development, support and competition. This course will make graduates more proficient in the use and varying applications of M&S associated with the different phases of the acquisition (system) lifecycle and better prepare them to work in this rapidly changing environment.

    Participants will gain:
    • A solid foundation of the DoD approach to M&S
    • Methods and techniques of M&S lifecycle management
    • An understanding of how the M&S resources as well as associated methods and procedures are applied to support the DoD acquisition process.
