CERTIFICATE OVERVIEW

Projects and project management has become the foundation for success in the public and private sectors. Enterprises achieve their goals through projects and effective project management. Successful project management requires achieving the scope (e.g., intended result), cost and schedule. In addition, the increasing complexity of work and demands for "more with less" place special demands on the project manager.

The Project Management Certificate program provides you the opportunity to learn the basics of project management - how to plan, execute, control and complete projects.

In addition, our Project Management core courses prepare you to take the PMP® Certification Exam offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI is the worlds leading organization certifying and representing 60,000 project management professionals worldwide.

After completing the Project Management core courses, you can take in-depth courses to further develop your project management skills. The advanced courses focus on key trends in managing projects and demands on the project managers. You will learn how to prepare project schedules, develop project measures and advanced approaches to project control; and how to develop, lead and motivate project teams. If dealing with risk and complexity is part of your work environment, you will learn both standard and advanced techniques to aid you. After successfully completing the four core courses and one elective, you will earn the George Mason University Professional Certificate of Completion

Michael R. Van Dyke is an associate of Business Performance Group providing training, team-building, and coaching services to business teams and individuals. He is a certified coach (NCC) through the Newfield Network and a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF).

Van Dyke worked in higher education for 20 years, wearing two hats: professor and project manager. As a theatrical Production Manager, Van Dyke honed his skills as a team development specialist, managing 12-28 overlapping project teams per year. With teams composed of union workers, technical professionals, students, and volunteers, managing team dynamics became a constant practice. By capturing the 'lessons learned' and applying them to new situations, Van Dyke can provide an array of proven strategies.

Through training with Project Adventure, an international outdoor experiential educational organization, Mr. Van Dyke believes in 'hands-on' learning through individual and group exercises. For four years, he was the Program Administrator for Corporate Challenge, an outdoor team building company that catered to the fifth largest electric utility company at the time, Northeast Utilities. The Nuclear Division used Corporate Challenge programs to mount a change initiative, sending 120 top managers through a two-year series of team training. Even the lecture portions of his presentations are not boring since he updates his professional speaking skills through membership in the National Speakers Association (NSA) and the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). Mr. Van Dyke regularly speaks on the human dynamics side project management and innovative business leadership.

Van Dyke earned his MFA in Technical Design and Production at the Yale School of Drama and a BA in Communications Studies Education at the University of Massachusetts.
