Under the Code of Virginia on a space available
basis, Virginia residents 60 years or older may register for and attend
up to three non-credit continuing education courses per year without
payment of instruction-related fees. This exemption does not apply
to out-of-pocket expenses such as food and course materials or lab
fees associated with non-credit continuing education programs. Likewise,
this exemption does not apply to programs specifically targeted for
or attended by senior citizens, e.g., Elder Hostel. Interested seniors
need to complete and submit the following Request for Waiver form
within ten business days prior to the beginning of the program. The
waiver must be attached to the program registration form.
Academic Credit Classes
Senior citizens who are interested in taking academic courses must do so through the George Mason University Admissions Office. Begin by reviewing the Senior Citizen Waiver Brochure, located at http://registrar.gmu.edu/forms/swbrochure.pdf. Also, see their web site (http://admissions.gmu.edu/) for more information about the non-degree admissions process and details on how to enroll for classes, or contact that office directly at 703-993-2400 or at admissions@gmu.edu. Once you are accepted as a student, you will also need to submit the Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver (http://registrar.gmu.edu/forms/SW.pdf).
