Education Tax Credit Information

There are education tax credit opportunities available to qualified students. Students may be able to claim a Lifetime Learning Tax credit of up to $2,000 for qualified tuition and related expenses paid for George Mason University courses.

Under the Lifetime Learning Credit eligible students may claim "a lifetime learning credit of up to $2,000 for qualified education expenses paid for all students enrolled in eligible educational institutions. There is no limit on the number of years the lifetime learning credit can be claimed for each student." (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p970.pdf). Students enrolled in for-credit courses at George Mason University will automatically be sent the 1098-T form. Questions related to the for-credit course forms should be addressed to 703-993-2484. Students in non-credit courses must request their tuition payment history from the sponsoring university department.

Upon request, the Office of Continuing Professional Education will provide information for the classes they sponsored only.
    • Please send and e-mail request to: shough@gmu.edu
    • Please include the following in the e-mail:
      • Your name, address, student ID number
      • The name of the courses
      • The dates that you took the course
Written confirmation of class attendance & tuition paid will be mailed within one week of request.
